Designing for the second look.

The first glance gets attention. The second look is where people decide. Notes on designing the half-second that matters.

Everyone designs for the first glance — the thumb-stopping scroll moment. It matters, but it’s cheap. Bright colour and a big face will get a first glance. The second look is harder to earn, and it’s where people actually decide.

What a second look needs

A reason to keep looking: a detail that rewards attention, a line of copy that lands differently the second time, an image that holds more than it shows at first. It’s the difference between being noticed and being considered.

Attention is rented. Curiosity is owned.

Build in a hidden layer

On Signal we hid a soundwave in the counter of every letter. Most people never notice. The ones who do tell their friends, and the brand becomes a thing worth explaining.

Signal’s launch posters only reveal the full headline when viewed from across the street.

Test it slowly

We review work at two speeds: a half-second flash and a full minute of silence. If it fails either test, it isn’t finished.
